Will Setterfield | 2021 Season Review
SEASON SYNOPSIS
At the end of 2020, nearly every Carlton fan through Will Setterfield was going to develop into a gun of the competition. He was pretty much unanimously voted the most improved player by the fans and found a home as a contested ball getting, tackling machine in the guts alongside Crippa and co. However, in 2021 something changed. He was moved as a defensive winger. In a similar mould to Angus Brayshaw from the Dees, but the desired result was vastly different. After a serviceable round 1, his round 2 games were dismal, causing him to be omitted the following week. He returned in round 9 where he managed to stay in the side until round 12 before missing out until his last appearance of the season against Geelong in round 17.
A pretty underwhelming season for Will, averaging only 15 touches a game, only laying 2 tackles, 11.5 effective disposals and 2.9 inside 50’s - none breaking the above-average mark in accords to other midfielders. A drastic difference to his very promising 2020, this was a very disappointing season for the Blues fans who had hope for him. Was it due to bad coaching? Or was there a work ethic issue? We don’t know and probably won’t, so we can only hope that he can rebound for a season in 2021 which we all know he can produce.
OFF-SEASON & 2021 OUTLOOK
Setterfield would be loving the new coaching appointment at the moment. After being tortured with poor tactics in 2021, hopefully, he can move to his rightful position in the midfield. However, with Adam Cerra and George Hewitt all but certain of being Carlton players (not official at the time of writing) this will make it alot harder for him to break back into the place he once called home. He is very much in the Matt Kennedy mould and considering the amount of football he got towards the end of last year, things aren’t looking too good for Setterfield. He doesn’t have anything to his game, at the moment which sets him apart from the rest and that could cost him. Unless Voss has seen something in him where he feels he can recapture his 2020 form then I don’t think we will be seeing alot of Will Setterfield in the Navy Blue for too much longer. Which is a great shame as on his day he can be a fantastic option.
