Matt Owies | 2021 Season Review

Written by Ari Stamatakos

SEASON SYNOPSIS

Not much was known about Matt Owies coming into 2021. He played 1 game last year where he was pretty quiet and didn’t impact at all. Many thought that this would be his last opportunity at salvaging something from his AFL career. The crafty small forward made his debut in round 7 against the Bombers and made a splash. Kicking 3 goals, starting a fight and inspiring the Blues to a memorable victory. He continued his good form, kicking at least 1 goal in 7 of his next 8 games before a barren patch towards the end of the season saw him dropped at the conclusion at the end of round 20.

As a forward, goals are most important, so considering that he averaged 1.2 this season - which ranks above average - shows how good a season he had. As well as this, he averaged 2.9 tackles, 1.2 tackles inside 50 and 15.2 pressure acts - all ranking above average in the competition.

BEST PERFORMANCE

Talking about making an impact. In Owies’ first game back in the side, against the Bombers, MCG, 50 thousand strong, he had the game of his life. With all the pressure from Fans, Media and critics alike, it may be too much for some players. Matt Owies saw that notion and couldn't hear it through his 3 goals and 4 tackles which inspired this Carlton team over the line. Owies had a game to remember, and it was epitomised when he kicked his third, gee'd up the Carlton cheer squad and stuck it in the face of Nathan Redman.

Sitting on the couch at home, we all could feel the energy that moment created, it single-handedly lifted the spirits of the Blues and gave them something to play for. It was an epic moment and will live long in the memory of most Carlton fans. He announced himself to the Carlton faithful and it was a marvellous moment to see a young kid step up to the occasion and take it on with full force.

OFF-SEASON & 2021 OUTLOOK

While Owies might not play round 1 next year, he will push any forward for a place in 1’s hands down. He provides real competition and an extra dynamic which could be a trick up the sleeve of Micheal Voss. With Eddie Betts no longer at the club, he is probably the best pure ‘small’ forward we have, although I’m not sure he has the experience or consistently to start off the get-go. Expect to see him at some stage during 2022.
