Brodie Kemp | 2021 Season Review
Written by Ari Stamatakos
SEASON SYNOPSIS
At the start of the season, hopes were high for Brodie Kemp. He was drafted in 2019 and missed the whole of 2020 recovering from an ACL injury. He was set back again, this time by a foot injury late in pre-season. He made his VFL debut in round 6, being a shining light on that day, having 8 marks and 17 touches. Due to the Covid lockdown, VFL was cancelled for 3 weeks, before they made a return. Kemp had a quiet one in his return game, and the same in his second. His third game back was much improved, having 21 touches and 4 tackles. He made his AFL debut in the second last round, being one of the very shining lights in a very poor Carlton outfit that got absolutely spanked by the Power. His next game against the Giants provided us with the most glorious doge out of traffic. Pivoting on a dime to get rid of two Giants players, before brushing them aside and he burst through the middle of Marvel stadium and kicked the ball inside 50.
OFF-SEASON & 2021 OUTLOOK
Kemp played in defence for his two AFL games this year as well as his stint in the VFL. He is good enough and has the build to play in a multitude of positions. But what Kemps needs to do to set himself apart from the rest of the squad, is to find his best position. Whilst versatility is good, for him to crack into the first 22, he needs to find his best position. Whether this is in defence, to make up for the Marchbank absence and push Stocker or Williams up the ground. Playing as a mid-size forward, chopping out Harry and Curnow, whilst having the athleticism and marking ability to play up the ground. He played both in his draft year, so he does have experience, his awareness and ability to read the play very well makes him a very useful asset wherever he decides to play. An injury-free pre-season and Brodie Kemp could be a smoky heading into round 1.
