AFLW Round 9 Preview | Carlton v GWS

Written by Helena Petrou

Carlton head into the final game of the 2021 home and away season with their finals hopes diminished thanks to a North Melbourne win last night. However the Blues will be looking to duplicate their dominant performance of last round again this week. The Bagger’s will take on the GWS Giants at 4:10pm on Sunday at Blacktown ISP Oval, where they will look to secure the 4 points. It will be a game to watch as the two teams battle it out for their showing of season 2021.

Coming off a moral boosting 60-point win over the Gold Coast Suns Carlton will need to continue their excellent run of form against the Giants. Great performances across the board for the Blues last week saw them take control of the game and make the most of their opportunities. The synergy between Carlton’s defence and midfield will give them a large advantage over the low scoring Giants, who Carlton will look to shut down when entering the forward line. The Blues’ defence is set to be bolstered by the addition of young half back Charlotte Wilson, who was rested for the game against the Suns last week. Wilson’s impressive one on one ability and defensive pressure will be a welcome addition into the backline.

Key Players:

Madison Prespakis (#4):

Prespakis will be a key to the game for the Blues tomorrow, with Carlton needing to make a statement against GWS’ star-studded midfielders. Maddy will need to lift after last week’s performance against the Suns where she only gathered 11 disposals. Prespakis still found a way to impact the game laying 4 tackles, the second highest for the team. Her strong clearance work will assist the Blues in their attack, where Prespakis often links up with speedy forward Georgia Gee. Her strength in the contest and ability to kick on both feet will give Carlton a big advantage in their midfield battle.

Abbie McKay (#5):

McKay also had a disappointing performance in round 8 collecting only 9 disposals. McKay has been having a career best season where she has showcased her strength in the contest and quick decision making under pressure. A big game will be needed of McKay with Prespakis to give the Blue’s midfield the first chance to attack out of the centre.

Opposition Watch:

Similarly to Carlton, the Giants sit outside the finals cut off, also with 16 points. They are a low scoring team averaging 24 points a game, Carlton’s solid backline must take advantage of this and look to rebound into attack at every opportunity they receive. GWS are not a team to underestimate, they have been through many challenges this season such as games being cancelled and rescheduled at the last minute, as well as an interrupted pre-season seeing them enter a hub in Adelaide. Despite their difficult season the Giants have performed well on the field, and the Blues should not take them lightly.

Key Players:

Alyce Parker (#3):

Parker gathered 25 disposals and 4 tackles in round 8 against the Cats, continuing her impressive run of form. Parker was an All-Australian in 2020 and took home the Giants’ best and fairest award. Carlton will look to tag the dangerous midfielder and try limit her effect on the game.

Alicia Eva (#2):

The Giants’ captain collected 18 disposals last game and is always a danger in the midfield. She has also previously received All-Australian honours as well as a Best and Fairest at the Giants.

Prediction:

Carlton have hit some incredible form the past few rounds, playing with intent and passion. They will gain confidence knowing that they were able to secure such a big win last week, even without great performances from some of their key players. Ultimately Carlton’s determination to play finals will drive them this weekend, Blues to win by 25 points!
